Henge Happenings

The Henge of Keltria
 2350 Spring Road, PMB-140
Smyrna, GA 30080-2630-0369

Greetings:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding guidelines for submissions to Henge Happenings. They are as follows:

Profile:   Henge Happenings is a Neopagan journal, published by the Henge of Keltria.. Issued quarterly, its circulation varies greatly. Contact the Henge Office for the latest circulation. Trim size approximately 8.5” x11”. black & white, stapled, 8 to 16 pages. It is distributed in its entirety only to members of the Henge of Keltria as part of general membership. Membership in the Henge of Keltria is currently on a sliding scale from $15- to $35 per year.  Portions of Henge Happenings are posted on the web where there are many hits every month.

Articles:  Henge Happenings solicits articles from its membership for publication concerning the three Celtic Paths. The Bardic Path consists of Celtic World of Sea, the Mind, the Past, Ancestors, Lore, Genealogy, Songs, Poetry, Storytelling, and Mythology.  The Seer’s Path consists of The Celtic World of Land, the Body, the Present, Nature Spirits, Herbalism, Healing, Alchemy, Weather, and Divination (Ogham, Tarot, etc.).  The Druid’s Path consists of the Celtic World of Sky, the Spirit, the Body, God and Goddesses of the Celtic world, Theology, Ritual, Administration, Law, and Politics.  We may also consider articles concerning other areas if they are of interest to Druids, Celtic Path followers, or Neopagans.

Fiction:            Mythological short stories and “new mythology,” 500-2500 words. Druidic and Celtic Poetry, 200 words. Both are typically presented in “The Bardic Path.”

Non-Fiction:  Path related features, interviews, profiles, and essays: 500-2500 words. Reviews on Celtic, Druid, and Neopagan books should be from 150 to 350 words.

Submission Form:  Keltria Journal prefers submissions via Internet to Keltria-Office. DOS compatible diskette is also acceptable. We will accept typewritten and hand printed submissions if clearly legible. If articles make use of special characters or foreign words, submission in a word processor format that carries the special formatting is important. We are able to translate most word processing formats. We will contact you if the format which you send your material in is not translatable.

Content:  The Henge of Keltria and Henge Happenings does not accept articles that are clearly designed for or intended as advertising unless advertising fees are paid. We also will not publish oathbound material unless it is Keltrian material printed as a special addendum for individuals of the appropriate ring.

Submission Policy:  Send complete manuscript/article with cover letter. A bibliography is highly desired but not required.

Style:   Henge Happenings editors prefer active voice to passive voice.  We edit submissions for style if the passive voice is unacceptably high or there are other grammatical difficulties with the article. The editors reserve the right to refuse articles or edit them for space.  The editors may add graphics to the articles as they desire.

Cover Letter:

Distribution.  Please indicate in your cover letter if you submitted your article to Henge Happenings exclusively, simultaneously to other publications, or if other publications have printed it. We do not currently pay for articles in Henge Happenings.

Subject.  Please indicate which of the three Celtic Paths the article is intended unless the submission is an interview, review, or Letter.

Graphics.  If you have graphics that you would like included, please indicate so and include them with the article. Indicate the source of the graphics as well. (Photo by.... Drawing by ..., etc.)  If you have ideas about possible graphics that our staff could work on to compliment the article, include those ideas and possibly rough sketches.

Biography.  A short (50 words or less) biography about the author (written in third person) is desired. Such a biography should include published books and other personal background. Keltria prints these biographies when space allows. They also will show on the web.

Letters to the Editor: The cover letter must indicate that the letter is for publication and the distribution.

Reviews:  Be sure to include publisher’s information, including address, so that we may send  a tear sheet to the publisher. We do not print reviews for books that are not currently in print.

Interviews:  You must certify that you informed the person interviewed that you intend to have their interview published in Keltria Journal.  You, as interviewer, may make that certification. Please include the address of the person interviewed so we may send them a complimentary copy.

Rights: The Henge of Keltria retains shared rights with the author and may reprint the article in part or in whole within the publications of the Henge of Keltria. The Author retains rights and ability to have the same material published in a different venue.

Payment: Henge Happings only accepts material from members of the Henge of Keltria. It does not pay for articles it publishes.

Standards:

Brythonic refers to Welsh, Breton, and Cornish and excludes Gaelic.
Celtic as used within Keltria normally refers to the six modern Celtic Lands. References to insular Celts or other Celts must be clear.
            Danu is preferred to Dana.
Gaelic refers to languages of Irish, Manx and Scottish. It excludes Brythonic and should be avoided unless specifically needed for clarity..
            Imbolc is preferred to Imbolg.
Neopagan is the preferred form (vs. Neo-Pagan & Neo-pagan) in Henge Happenings.

The use of grave and acute accent marks varies greatly from region to region and author to author.  As such, we attempt to standardize upon the spellings used in A Dictionary of Irish Mythology by Peter Berresford Ellis and A Dictionary of Celtic Mythology by the same author as our standard spellings except as noted above.

Suggestions:

Review a few copies of Henge Happenings and determine if your work would fit with our style and themes.  Include a short note about yourself and why you are sending the piece.  Please include your name, address, and word count for the entire article on the first page or the cover letter. Make sure that you include your name in the article.

Tell us if someone else published the piece, and if so, who published it and when, including volume and issue number.  Tell us if you have sent it to several presses at once. We will presume the article is a multiple submission unless you tell us otherwise.

You can expect to hear from us in six to eight weeks if we accept your submission. If you wish to have your submission returned if not accepted, please include a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE) and indicate in your cover letter that you would like it back.

Do not be discouraged if we do not accept the piece.  Henge Happenings receives many articles that are good but do not exactly fit our focus. We will try to help you understand why your article wasn’t accepted and what you may be able to do to improve it.

Don’t be too wordy.  Slim down your article.  Articles of more than nine pages (typewritten, double spaced) are too long for publication and must be split over several issues.  This reduces the likelihood of our publishing it.  If long articles are split into parts, each of which stand on their own, their likelihood of publication increases substantially.
